Loved this, thank you, and the poem is sublime. My Mum always used to text me when she'd bought her first bunch of £1 daffs of the year, like our own first sign of spring - made it through another winter
What a buzz it was to first explore ‘Wriggly Road’ with wide eyes in the 90s; what a buzz it still is to collect strange vegetables, along with advice on how to cook them (‘make sure it’s proper soft all through, or it will kill ya’ sticks particularly in the brain when buying one very plain-looking cassava) - an absolute jewel in Hackney’s crown
Just seen this… apparently, this is feature of many members of the ‘bitter yam’ family. Delicious and nutritious when cooked, but containing alkaloids and other toxic chemicals that are neutralised by being very well heated for an hour or two. I rather think the ones I found on Wriggly Road would not pass muster at Islington Waitrose…
Absolutely love this today. I'm making my way home from Liverpool by train, through unlovely Birmingham New Street and Bristol Parkway. First thing I do when I finally arrive will be to get myself to a supermarket for £1 daffs. Even though where I live there are daffodils in bloom aplenty outside, it's nice to have them in the house too, for small quids.
The world pouring its cold into our girls really caught me today. Thank you - off to see if Amsterdam can offer me EUR1 daffodils
Am now happily muttering "daffodils from Amsterdam" tunelessly to myself.

Oh that burst my heart.
To “buggering on” and daffodils!

Oh, the joy of Ridley Road Market in full swing is UNMATCHED! 💖 Glad to have found your writing today, thanks to my Home feed suggesting this piece!
Aaah it’s swinging and springing there today.
Oh, this was so beautiful and much needed. Thank you 💚
Top arse mannequin. Top mum manicuring. Five stars to each and to the £1 daffs ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Reading this felt like feeling the warmth of the sun on a chilly March afternoon, absolutely joyful- thank you! x
Particularly lovely piece, Sophie.

Wriggly Rd! This near death warning is brilliant. Want to hear more.
